National Parks Project

I wanted to let everyone know what fun assignment we're going to begin working on this week.  Students are going to be researching one of our National Parks and completing an online flyer called a SMORE to present their information.  We'll begin on Monday with the research portion of the project.  Students are going to be using both books and the internet to look up information on their assigned park.  Our librarian has graciously volunteered to help students find books on National Parks this week during their library time.  They'll also be using their computer time during centers to research their park on the classroom Chromebooks.  You, parents, are encouraged to help your student continue to research at home.  Please get involved with this fun project.  After we have completed the research, students will be using a program called SMORE to complete an online flyer about their National Park.  I am including an example SMORE I made to give you and students an idea of what they can create.  We'll be presenting these SMORES in class on Friday, May 20.  You are welcome to attend the presentations.  As always, please contact me if you have any questions.  I hope you're looking forward to this fun assignment as much as I am.

The Great American Challenge Continues... and Other Things

The Great American Challenge

Our Great American Challenge continues.  We are on the 2nd part of the challenge, students must write the Pledge of Allegiance with 3 or less spelling mistakes.  I have extended the deadline from April 22nd to April 29th.  Please practice this with your student.  A copy of the Pledge can be found in the back of your student's agenda.  After April 29th, we will move into the third part of the challenge.  Students will need to know the capitals of all 50 states.  Students will be given an alphabetical list of all states.  They will need to write the capital next to the state.  Spelling will not count in this challenge.  Please don't hesitate to email me with any questions.

President Writing

Because of track break, we recently finished up our president reports.  Students did a great job researching either George Washington or Abraham Lincoln and completing a "Did you know that..." in first person.  Please ask your student about this fun project.  You'll soon be seeing them coming home to hang up on your fridge.

Reading and Writing Projects

If you were able to make it to Back to School Night, you may remember me explaining that there is NEVER a time in the day when a student can say, "I don't know what to do."  Students are always able to work on projects when they finish up an assignment early.  I wanted to say how pleased I have  been with their work.  We have had so many great projects lately.  I know that you have seen many of them coming home in Monday folders.  Ask your student if he/she has completed any lately.  We always have at least one Project of the Week.  These last few weeks, there have been so many great ones, that I haven't been able to only pick.  As you can see from this picture, last week I chose two, so ask your student if he/she has been chosen as Project of the Week lately?

School starts on Monday, March 28

Welcome back, everyone!  I hope it was a restful track break.  If you're a student and would like to post a blog entry telling us about what you did over track break, please post under comments of this entry.  It's going to be a busy next month for us.  We now know that our testing dates for SBAC are going to be May 23-27.  We will be busy preparing for the test.  Please know that Front Row is required for at least 30 minutes per week.  This is a great tool to best prepare students for the online type of test the SBAC will be.  If you are a parent who has not yet registered yet, please do so at your earliest convenience.  You'll be able to receive email updates on how your student is progressing.  If you have questions, please don't hesitate to ask.

Welcome!

Welcome to our classroom blog!  This is a place where you can come to find out more about what's going on in Mrs. Brimhall's 3rd grade class.  For students, you can participate by adding your own posts.  For parents, how often have you asked your student, "What did you do today in school?" and had a response of, "nothing."? Come to our blog to find out what's happening and begin those conversations with your child knowing more specifically what to ask.  Here's where you can keep up with what's going on in our classroom.  Welcome!
